A-Z Blog Challenge…”P”

Well “P” for Provincetown is a natural…so here we go.

kitty_magnetsMom makes these magnets for the shop…they hold cat food coupons on the fridge.

whale_watch_lWe are famous for whale watching (not for Nomming)

thanksgiving_monumentThe Pilgrim Monument celebrates Provincetown as the landing place of the Pilgrims.   It’s the tallest granite structure in the nation, and it’s over 100 years old.    The Mayflower Compact,  written to give free people the power to self govern was drafted out in the bay, so some call Provincetown the birthplace of democracy.  There were 2 woofies on the Mayflower but no cats!

winter_shotCuz she’s always making green papers, Mom usually only gets to the beach only in the winter…her favorite Cape Cod quote is

“A man may stand there and put all America behind him.”

Henry David Thoreau

Cape Cod National Seashore  is comprised of Ocean beaches, dunes, woodlands, freshwater ponds, and marshes .   We gots  lighthouses, a lifesaving station, numerous Cape Cod style houses, and Marconi’s Wireless Station site.  Macaroni is not served there.

provincetown-hyannis-nantucket-cape-cod-map-postcard_our_house

It’s 8 miles from our house to P-Town, The twins and David came from there, the rest of us were born in Truro.blueboat_meditation

We have tons of special events in Provincetown…

going_on

We have a ton of artists… in 1898, the Impressionist painter Charles Hawthorne came to Provincetown and founded the Cape Cod School of Art, it’s the oldest operating art colony in the United States.

Guys like Hans Hoffmann,  Jackson Pollock and William de Kooning have also painted here, one of them still has an unpaid bar tab at the Old Colony Tap.  And there’s  the  poets who came here to write : Eugene O’Neill, Tennessee Williams, former Poet Laureate Stanley Kunitz and Pulitzer Prize winners Mary Oliver and Norman Mailer.

Mom could tell you so much more, some other post.  Tune in tomorrow for “Q”!

The Sun Mom, the Sun!

momsun

Cape Cod has been blessed with two days of sun, and visitors!  I even left the house yesterday and took pictures and organized the new dog collars and harnesses.   Got the local gossip which was good, lots of new, interesting stores coming to town this summer.

These may be the last of the winter photos…

tiny_truro_cottage

I am smitten by this tiny cottage…it may even be 2 units (see the JH on the side) …even though no one is around, and I mean no one,

I feel funny looking in the windows.

porch_look_to_provincetown

This little cottage is “OceanView”…with sun you could easily see a blue sliver of ocean in the distance.

Hi Matthew, if your out there, I love and miss you.

Cage match! With Cranberry Sauce!

Every year this Cage appears in the parking lot of my downtown Provincetown neighbor,  Land’s End Hardware.

cage_emptyWhat’s going in there?  Chick-hens?

what_mom_what1What Mom, what?

sexy_elves

Sometimes I tell tourists that elves wrestle in a kiddie pool full of cranberry sauce.  It’s for charity, the Soup Kitchen you know.   Sometimes they almost believe me.  The soup kitchen and those in need are very real in this tiny town at the edge of the ocean, the elves, sadly are not.

trees_cageOh it’s just trees Mom!

landsendrainbow2008This rainbow is taken from what must be the penthouse apartments on top of the hardware store.

Are you viewing this blog in a reader?  If not, do you see the Facebook widget  on the side?  Does  anyone know how to tweek the code to adjust the size. I can’t figure it out.  Thanks for any info you Smarties might have.

John Clayton, Sophie, & gargoyles

gargoyles_snow

I was out at the beach the other night to photograph these new Gargoyles and I was drawn over to Provincetown artist John Clayton, who was joyfully painting in the quickly disapearing, magical Cape Cod light.

john_clayton

He’s a nice friendly town guy who can be spotted with his girl Sophie capturing images of Provincetown heavy with intensity, yet light enough to want to reach out and touch.  I have no formal art reviewing credentials.  His work make me feel good to be here.

john_clayton_beach

These pictures really don’t do it justice, you really gotta be here.   Provincetown, as well as being  the birthplace of Democracy,  is America’s oldest continuous art colony.   Here’s a neat video that shows how John’s work suddenly comes alive!

I am  also painting this afternoon…little wooden boxes made special to hold dice for Dungeons & Dragons…so I’m an artist too, but a lot different!  Tomorrow is CATNIP giveaway so be sure to visit!
