Mum and I are snuggled up on the couch downloading a ton of music for summer playlists. The Miro video and music player (and podcast client) is very, awesome. She loves Open Source more than butter. I love Butter More.

Oh Hey, I took your spot while you were frosting those!
Why is Open Source better?
better quality
higher reliability
more flexibility
lower cost
and an end to predatory vendor lock-in
What is predatory vendor lock-in you say? Well if Betty Crocker sold you a cook book and forbid you to alter, say the tuna casserole by adding potato chips on top, that would be an example of a predatory vendor. Well the heck With Betty I say, I got a great recipe from my neighbor Martin and we jazzed it up with potato chips and black olives! Open Source software, or FOSS (Free Open Source Software) is created by users for users with transparency and collaborative peer review. “FREE” refers to the freedom to copy and re-use the software. The Boston based Free Software Foundation promotes computer user freedom and defends the rights of free software users worldwide. Tuna Casserole for all Kitties!

Where does the time go? This weeks Photohunt Theme is Technology and luckily I just snapped this “Technology” photo.
Richard Stallman, Linus Torvalds, Eric S.Raymond, and Bruce Perens are all well known in the world of computer technology.
I was introduced to them in a film called Revolution OS
Each one of these brilliantly unique men are committed to improving the freedoms of all people, you don’t have to be a “computer geek” to enjoy learning about these heroes. Martin Owens is my Boston based guru and leader of The Ubuntu Massachusetts Local Community Team, a group of volunteers and activists organized around the Ubuntu operating system, advocating digital rights and freedom and promoting Ubuntu as a step towards achieving this.
Hey, this blog would never have come to life with out the help of the dedicated and patient teachers there like Martin, Mike, Sara, Rio, and Johnathan.
Ok silly Mommy posted Monday’s post on Sunday…she’s only human. Today’s second serving is a new video from Nixie Pixel about fantastic free software. I use and recommend all of these, And I just adore her!

Wednesday a lady purchased this magnet from me. The image is of a person throwing away their “Windoze” operating system, essentially putting trash in it’s place. I burst into joyful conversation with her and she revealed that she is the wife of Peter Brown, executive director of the Free Software Foundation based here in Boston. They have just launched Windows 7 Sins the case against Microsoft and proprietary software… a crucial campaign that concerns us all. Microsoft is trashing your freedoms… Please take a few minutes to become conscious of this situation, Freedom is important!
It’s also tremendously cool that one of these guys fighting for our freedoms is going to have a magnet I made* on his fridge. These guys, like Richard Stallman, Eric S. Raymond, and Bruce Perens are like rock stars to me. *I did not design the graphic, I just made it into a magnet…would love to know who did.
Mom went to Star Trek again! First time she went to Imax and didn’t come home untill 2am. Almost as exciting as the movie was some geeks she overheard at Legal Seafoods in Natick saying that Linux has been adopted by about 66% of the population…that makes Mommy very happy. At least this time she came home earlier, and after making me pose with this bear, gave us HAM!

Back up your Hard Drive at the end of your day! I cannot stress this enough. My 2 month old Dell laptop crashed last week and all could have been lost if not for my friend Mike’s ultra fabulous script found
I plug in my external harddrive at a set time every night and all my new files are copied automatically while I’m sleeping. Everything was right there after the crash: pictures, music, bookmarks, passwords, and every little bit of custom tweeking I had done. Your files are important, that’s why you bothered to save them…so please backup and keep every pet photo, and pie recipe safe. Speaking of pie, Summer is a great time to bake a nice fruit pie for your IT guy.
